After lunch, the Stars were treated to a presentation by former “Star” (2003) and paramedic, Tim Hayes.

Tragically, Tim’s legs were traumatically amputated during a 9-1-1 response on a highway. He relayed his impressive story of tenacity and determination through words and video that left the crowd riveted to their feet. The Star of Life medals were distributed to the 77 persons being recognized and it’s on to dinner in DC… Big day full of Hill visit training and meetings with US Senators and Representatives.

Tracy, CA

A 20-year EMS veteran, Louis, along with his parents and two brothers, emigrated from Nicaragua to the United States in 1983 when he was 17 years old. Arriving in this country knowing very little English, Louis quickly learned the language, graduated from high school and shortly after started his career in medicine as a medical assistant before becoming a paramedic. Known throughout AMR’s Alameda County operations as a superb clinician and field training educator, Louis is a seasoned professional who has dedicated his career to making a difference in the community he serves. Whether working with local fire departments to provide flu and H1N1 vaccines to the public or providing Spanish translation for patients by phone while off duty, Louis’ commitment to excellence and compassion for his patients sets him apart from the rest.

Veronica began her career in Emergency Services by volunteering with Elfrida Fire Department in 1993. She started with a Basic Wildland Fire Certificate and Structure Fire I and II Certifications. In 1995 she obtained her EMT certification and in 1998 was certified as a Paramedic. She was hired full time with the Bisbee Fire Department where she worked for nearly 9 years. Elfrida Fire Department, having expanded and increased its level of service recruited me back to the Department as paid full time Firefighter/Paramedic.

For the past two years, she has been employed as a full-time Paramedic with Arizona Ambulance of Douglas where her primary mission is to provide long distance healthcare transportation services to individuals requiring in-patient services at a higher level of care than what is available in the rural community.
